More than 40 people on Great Barrier Island in Auckland's Hauraki Gulf have attended a course on whale stranding.
The island is the site of New Zealands largest recorded whale stranding in 1985 when up to 450 pilot whales stranded at Kawa bay, and the course aimed to ready people to deal with a similar event.
People on the course learnt to refloat-whales and techniques for keeping them alive a Department of Conservation spokesperson said today.
Keeping the whales cools was one of the key things course taught.
Everyone who attended has agreed to be part of a response team for future strandings.
