Gisborne beach after main sewer pipe cracks

A Gisborne beach is closed after the city's main sewer pipe cracked.

A number of holes have appeared in the pipe and there are leaks on the road near Midway Beach.

The area has been sanitised and public health authorities have been notified.

Gisborne District Council Water Utilities Manager Kevin Strongman said the cause of the cracks are unknown.

The area is expected to be closed to the public for the next few days.
