A German tourist whose car crashed near Rotorua remains in a critical condition at Waikato Hospital.
The 19-year-old was driving a car involved in a head-on collision on State Highway 30, at Horohoro, near the intersection with Bryce Rd, about 9.30pm on Saturday.
His passenger, an 18-year-old German tourist, sustained multiple fractures and was flown to Auckland City Hospital on Sunday.
Waikato DHB spokeswoman Mary Anne Gill said the driver, who has head injuries, remained in a critical condition in the hospital's intensive care unit.
A Te Kuiti couple also injured in the crash were in a stable condition in Rotorua Hospital.
Sergeant Andrew Lynch of the Rotorua police said the two German tourists had been driving on State Highway 30 towards Rotorua and the couple from Te Kuiti were driving away from the city.
The 65-year-old female driver of the second car was recovering from moderate injuries while her passenger, a 76-year-old man, was in intensive care.
