A Hamilton man is believed to have sat shot dead in his car outside the Hamilton police station for about 40 minutes today before he was discovered.
The 50-year-old man, who police say they will not be naming, was discovered about 7.15am.
It is understood a member of the public had called into the police station and noticed the dead man in his Holden Commodore wagon when leaving.
The man had a gun shot wound to the head.
Hamilton police Senior Sergeant Stefan Macfie said it appeared the man had died between 30 minutes to 45 minutes earlier. However, a doctor was today to determine the time of death.
Mr Macfie said no gun shots were heard before the man was discovered.
Mr Macfie said a number of motorists would have passed the dead man's car outside the police station, but the man would not have been noticeable. "It was still pretty overcast about 7am and the car was parked on the darkish side of the police station."
A small calibre rifle was found in the car with the man.
Mr Macfie said the man was not known to police and they would not be making any further investigations.
