UPDATE
A 26-year-old man was killed this morning when his vehicle hit a train on a crossing at Carterton, about 70km northeast of Wellington.
Daniel Robert Quin of Carterton died instantly when his ute hit the carriage behind the locomotive at about 6.45am on the main Masterton-Wellington line. A passenger in the ute was injured.
Tranz Rail spokesman Alan McDonald said stop signs were operating at the crossing.
Train passengers were transported by coach while the crash was being investigated.
