KEY POINTS:
Police are investigating how a man came to make a dramatic entry to SkyCity on the night of Christmas Day.
The man was driving a small white sedan when it ploughed through a large glass window at the entrance to the Auckland landmark.
A witness told the Herald it appeared the man had deliberately driven the car into the window, sending shattered glass throughout the SkyCity entrance.
The witness, who was sitting at a cafe, said the vehicle was being driven by an Asian man.
"I just heard a loud crash and saw the window shatter."
The witness, who asked not to be named, said the driver emerged from the car screaming, "I not drink" before being detained by security staff at SkyCity.
Dozens of people watched the drama and took photos.
SkyCity spokeswoman Dorita Hollins said police were called immediately and security officers held the driver until the police arrived. to take him away.
Ms Hollins said security staff were not sure how the man had crashed into the glass, or if his intentions were deliberate.
"As to what his motive was, we don't know," she said.
"I don't think the guy's intention was to hurt anyone."
The incident was a matter for police and SkyCity staff would do whatever they could to help them, she said.
Police have since located the driver and are speaking with him.
