Police are calling for any witnesses to a fatal crash on Desert Road on Friday afternoon which tragically killed two young brothers to come forward.
Arteen Mosaferi, 4, died at the scene and his baby brother Radeen Mosaferi, 2 months, died at Starship Hospital on Sunday from injuries sustained in the crash.
Their mother, Dr Mohadeseh Sharifi, was critically injured and their father, Siamak Mosaferi, received moderate injuries. However both were stable in a ward today at Waikato Hospital.
The family is understood to have been heading to Wellington for the Easter break with friends when the crash with the truck occurred.
Bay of Plenty road policing Senior Sergeant Fane Troy said police were in the early stages of the investigation. The crash involved four vehicles, including two truck and trailer units, which were all heading south on the Desert Road at about 3.27pm on Good Friday.
The crash happened on a straight stretch of road between Waipakihi Rd and Rangipo Intake Rd.
Troy could not say where the car carrying the children was in the line-up because it was still part of the investigation.
"It is just the early stages of the investigation so we are just dealing with everyone involved and the family."
One of the other truck drivers was also injured as a result of the crash.
Police had spoken to some witnesses, but Troy wanted to talk to more.
"We've got some witnesses, but there will be other people in the area that don't stop and so forth."
He urged them to contact Taupo Police Station.
