The two Kaitaia College girls' teams enjoyed a great winter in the Northland Secondary Schools Sporting Association midweek championships which concluded with them playing each other in the Division 1 final last Wednesday.
The Kaitaia 2nd X1 development squad finished their qualifying Northern Division 1 campaign on top of the standings, with the Kaitaia 1st X1 in second spot.
Both battled Whangarei college sides in the round robin before progressing into a play-off against the two top contenders from the Southern Division 1, who were both eliminated to pave the way for an-all Kaitaia final.
The match took place in torrential rain which left surface flooding.
The 1st team ruled the waves to win 4-1 and denying their 2nd X1 counterparts a repeat of their upset win at the beginning of the season.
A supporter on the sideline noted the final was played in conditions so wet, it left the school's bottom fields virtually under water, and perhaps the result was always going to be a matter of luck.
"Luck was on the 1st X1 side on the day to take out the title. You could say it was the first waterpolo game played in Kaitaia. With the two teams we have a great foundation to merge players from both for next season."
