Kaitaia College has brought in specialist CrossFit instructors from Infinite Scope Gym as part of their Taha Tinana enrichment focus.
Certified instructor and gym owner Hine Lum was keen for all college students to be introduced to CrossFit. Last year, five Kaitaia College students travelled to the United States to represent the country at CrossFit Kids in Ramona, California. These students were able to give back to their school community this week, by acting as assistants and demonstrators for their peers.
CrossFit is constantly varied functional movements performed at high intensity. All CrossFit workouts are based on functional movements, and these movements reflect the best aspects of gymnastics, weightlifting, running, rowing and more.
A CrossFitter will never do the same routine twice in one week and each workout will usually last between 45-60 minutes. Every student in Years 9, 10 and 11 was able to attend a class. Senior students were also able to join in as their time permitted, which created a great supportive team atmosphere as juniors worked out with seniors.
Principal Jack Saxon was keen to support Infinite Scope in bringing CrossFit to the college.
"We wanted to springboard off the international success of our tamariki in 2015, providing an opportunity for all of our students to engage in this kaupapa."
He hopes it will become an annual fixture on the physical education calendar as part of a strong commitment for students to participate in a range of physical education opportunities targeting development of mental fortitude and healthy bodies.
Particular highlights included a 40kg Year 9 student mastering a 40kg deadlift, multiple students who voiced their incredulity in completing the lifts - then going on to nail these with a huge boost in confidence and sense of achievement; and it was also fantastic to see the students bringing a positive attitude to each session and supporting each other throughout the many challenges they faced.
Hine Lum said she was thrilled with the week of classes.
"I thoroughly enjoyed working with the KC students. At times it was very challenging for some, and for others they were complete naturals. I look forward to working with Northland's future athletes."
Hine was supported by fellow crossfitters Tania King, a former Kaitaia College student, Roselle Barrientos and Kirsty Saxon.
