A A record entry and almost perfect surf conditions made the 25th annual Polar Bear Classic surf competition held at Sandy Bay an unprecedented success. The contest has become well known around the country as a fun event attracting top surfers and social board riders alike, but was one of the mostsuccessful ever when the weather gods smiled and delivered blue skies and clean surf breaks throughout the weekend Last year the competition was held after two weeks of postponements. Organiser Mal Eggington said the response this year had exceeded expectations with more than 40 competitiors in several different divisions. Entries came from as far south as Auckland with a strong contingent from Kaitaia and the Far North. The contest had a numbers cut off at 90. The divisions were under-14, under-18, open, women's, over-40 and over-50s. Boards could be any length. There was $1000 in prize money won and huge prize packs for all divisions from a variety of sponsors.
