The Landmark Homes Midwinter Trophy is set to bring in a good crowd as the Taniwha Darts Association look to increase playing numbers.

Taking place on July 21-22, 53 of the 96 spaces in the competition have been taken following a highly successful Northland Darts Open, TDA's first major competition.

TDA's Howard Murden said the tournament is open to players of all skill levels.

"This is an open singles tournament, you don't need to be a member of any association or affiliated to any club, simply register and play," he said.

"We encourage players from all around to come and enjoy what is set to be a fantastic weekend of darts.

"Our kind sponsors Landmark homes have not only stepped up to sponsor this event for the second year running, they have also increased the prize pool which now sits at $3000 for the singles event only, with first prize doubled from $500 in 2017 to $1000 this year."

Darts continues to be a rising sport in the world and has become a major spectator sport, drawing major crowds to big tournaments.

Murden said TDA is looking forward to the calibre of play likely to be on show.

"With a rising number of dart players in Northland we are excited to be holding this tournament once again," he said.

"We look to encourage players of all abilities and ages to compete.

"Our facility at the Whangarei Golf Club allows us to hold tournaments up to a capacity of 96 players with 16 boards in play."
