Hours after trying to earn his place in next year's IPC long-course swimming world champs in the pool in Auckland on Monday, Whangarei Paralympic champion Cameron Leslie will fly to Germany for a bash at his other passion - wheelchair rugby.
Leslie is part of the Wheel Blacks, Te Waka Hou, taking part in the Bernd Best wheelchair rugby competition in Cologne from March 22-24.
He's hoping the world's largest club contest will help prepare and propel Te Waka Hou into the wheelchair rugby world champs in Denmark next year.
Leslie said this Te Waka Hou team was a largely development squad, but the competition in the sport affectionately known as murderball would be fierce.
With a moniker like murderball and an admittedly violent-looking image - with wheelchairs bashing together and competitors often getting thrown out of their machines - Leslie understands why the sport is compelling for spectators and competitors alike.
