Dairy farmer Brian Greenway threw his weight behind a winning team at Waipu Cove Surf Club's 38th annual carnival.
The Kaiwaka man was part of the victorious tug o' war side yesterday and admitted to being "pretty buggered" after the final pull saw his team, made up of local and two American lifeguards, win against another local outfit - the Pu-Wai.
But there was little reprieve for Mr Greenway, 69, before he headed for the hills to milk his cows.
"I might be a bit late tonight but as long as it's done before the tanker gets there tomorrow I'll be okay."
Hundreds of people packed the beach to enjoy good old-fashioned Kiwi summer games, such as egg throwing and beauty pageants.
There were a few who even lined up for the not so traditional events such as the disgusting food competition and devoured tasty morsels including sardines set in lemon jelly, lambs' tongue and raw egg and Weetbix soaked in fish oil.
For 19-year-old Lana Bowden strutting along the sandy catwalk in front of a cheering crowd to be crowned Miss Waipu Cove and doing a muscle pose was all part of a day at the beach.
"You can't take yourself too seriously when you come to something like this," Miss Bowden said.
