Water quality
A joint local authority project to identify ways to improve water quality in the Whangarei Harbour has reached the stage of a draft report. Northland Regional Council chief executive Malcolm Nicholson said the report will form a building block for setting catchment-specific water quality and quantity limits for
the upper harbour catchments (Hatea, Waiarohia, Raumanga, Kirikiri, Otaika and Purewa) as part of the Northland Water Project being developed to meet the new National Policy Statement on freshwater management.
Poplar nurseries
With the acute shortage of poplar wands for erosion control work in Northland, NorthTec has told the Northland Regional Council it is interested in developing poplar nurseries at the Whangarei and Rawene campuses as part of the horticultural education programme. NorthTec management said the training might lead to the development of private sector nurseries by students who have taken the relevant courses, which could then supply Northland needs.
