A teenager found on the side of a rural Northland road this morning has been taken to hospital with critical head injuries.
The man was found by a member of the public about 6am at Matarau, 14km northwest of Whangarei.
Constable Jim Adamson of Whangarei Police said the man, aged about 17 or 18, had critical head injuries.
He said it had not yet been established how the injuries were caused.
An ambulance spokeswoman confirmed the man had been taken to Northland Base Hospital in Whangarei with critical injuries.
Anyone with information about how the man was injured is asked to call police.
