Kaikohe East School opens bike trail

Kaikohe East School has opened a cycle track aiming to make exercise fun and accessible. Thanks to months of fundraising, grant applications and hard yakka in what was an overgrown paddock, the decile one, 240-pupil school now has 60 bicycles of all sizes and a figure-eight gravel track. Olympic and Commonwealth Games cyclist Laurie Byers, a Kaikohe resident, led children on the first circuit after the official opening on Thursday.

Former All Blacks coach Sir Graham Henry, who led New Zealand to victory in the 2011 World Cup, visited Northland on Saturday to see for himself the transformation of Whangaruru Rugby Club. After years of struggle and poor facilities, the club now has a brand-new sports complex, soaring player numbers in junior rugby, netball and basketball, and big plans for the future. Petrolhead heaven as Cruz'n the Bayz rolls in to Kerikeri

More than 170 classic cars, hot rods and motorbikes took part in Cruz’n the Bayz car show on Kerikeri’s main street on Saturday. The three-day rock ’n roll-themed event also called in to Kaikohe, Kawakawa, Moerewa, Ōpua, Paihia, Whangaroa, Kāeo and Russell, and will wrap up with a whānau fun day from noon on Sunday at the Waitangi Sports Fields.
