Placard-waving protesters from the small farming town of Hikurangi have brought their protests to the public gallery of the Whangarei District Council for the second week in a row.
Last week, residents of Gomez Rd attended a WDC District Living meeting to protest against the council's plans to develop a noisy motorsport park in their area.
Not content just to hold their signs, the residents interjected in the meeting, calling on council staff to "tell the truth" and "put it in your own backyard".
Yesterday, Hikurangi residents with a different complaint brought their signs to a full meeting of the WDC.
Calling themselves the Hikurangi Swamp Scheme United Farmers group, the men let their signs do the talking, until the end of the meeting when they were surrounded by councillors eager to hear about their complaints.
The farmers held signs saying "Mismanagement, back door deals = broke" and "Free milk in schools doesn't extend to this classroom".
Spokesman Ben Smith said the group was unhappy about the council's management of the Hikurangi Swamp Scheme. He said farmers in the group were facing large rates increases as a result of the council's "flawed administration" of the scheme and the the group would not "go away".
