On July 25, police attempted to stop the vehicle the man was driving in Awanui.
He allegedly failed to stop and led police on a pursuit through forestry roads. The chase was abandoned after two shots were allegedly fired into the air from the vehicle being chased.
The vehicle was located on Ninety Mile Beach and the police Armed Offenders Squad was deployed but the driver could not be found.
At the time, Kaitaia police sought public help to locate a 2003 silver-coloured Ford Falcon, registration BHR758, and said they were following strong lines of inquiry.
