There'll be some serious weights lifted when the National Classic Powerlifting Championships are held in Whangārei next week.
The event will see 228 powerlifters bend their barbells as they strain towards national glory.
The Northland Powerlifting Association is gearing up to host New Zealand's best powerlifters for the National Classic Powerlifting Championships at Forum North from August 23-26.
The association is hosting the competition which will be the largest national classic championships held in the county. Northland last hosted the national championships in 2007 when around 50 people competed.
Joseph Whittaker, Northland Powerlifting Association president, said that the organising team is excited about the number and calibre of athletes heading their way north.
"We're looking forward to hosting everyone. It's going to be a really busy four days, with some pretty incredible lifting on show," Whittaker said.
There will be strong local representation with 24 Northland lifters competing, spanning a range of weight classes and age groups. Whangārei powerlifter Katrina Barrett is competing in her fifth nationals.
"It feels special to be competing here at home. I'm sure I'll have some nerves but I'm looking forward to getting out on the platform and getting into it," Barrett said.
The lineup includes both new and seasoned lifters, such as Evie Corrigan and Brett Gibbs, returning from recent success at the world championships in Calgary.
Lifting will start from 9am and 2pm each day. There is also a 6pm session on the Thursday and Saturday to accommodate the large number of athletes.
Spectators are welcome, and entry is by gold coin.
