Whangārei motorists are already making the most of cheap all-day car parking.
Wilson Parking took over the management of the site between James, John and Dent St on behalf of Auckland developers The Neil Group on Thursday.
In early May, the site was nearing the end of demolition and its developer owners said while it had no immediate development plans for the site, it was investigating a temporary pay and display carpark.
When the Northern Advocate visited the carpark on Friday, 49 cars were using the recently demolished site. It was yet to have carpark bays painted.
The pay and display car park costs motorists $1 for 12 hours if payment is made using the ParkMate app. It's $2 for 12 hours for motorists who use the pay and display machine.
Parking payment app ParkMate notifies customers their parking session is nearing an end and allows them to be able to extend their session remotely, without having to return to their vehicle.
The carpark is ticketless and cashless. Motorists make payments against their licence plate number and can pay using eftpos at the machine.
The new carpark comes as Whangārei District Council loses around 40 carparks at the Canopy Bridge carpark with work starting on the Hundertwasser Art Centre with Wairau Māori Art Gallery.
