Heavy fog that blanketed parts of Northland yesterday - causing flights to be cancelled or delayed at Whangarei Airport - is unlikely to continue today.

The MetService said light winds and moist air caused widespread fog across the region yesterday morning, but with the wind expected to pick up today, it's unlikely there will be any more serious fog over the weekend.

The fog yesterday led to the 7am flight from Whangarei Airport to Auckland to be delayed, with the flight not taking off until 11.18am. Meanwhile, the 9.25am flight from Auckland into the airport was cancelled and the return 9.45am flight was also canned.

The MetService said the moist air yesterday kept temperatures warmer than normal, but the mercury was likely to drop today and tomorrow while a south-easterly system descends on Northland.

This is likely to lead to cooler temperatures today and tomorrow, while things will heat up, and be clearer, on Monday in time for the start of the school holidays.
