A community meeting is being held at Moerewa's Youth Centre tonight to discuss ways of making the town's roads safer.
The meeting, scheduled to start at 6pm, will be the third since July when a series of serious crashes sparked calls for change from residents in the Mid North town.
Community board member Kelly Stratford said groups of people were working together, road by road, to find solutions for problems in their own streets.
Suggestions being explored included changing through roads into cul-de-sacs, installing chicanes or speed bumps, and narrowing roads by planting trees or gardens. The aim of road narrowing was to remove the mindset that Moerewa's streets were highways or race tracks.
Other ideas included installing a bike track and signs that look like children on the road edge to remind drivers to slow down. Mrs Stratford said proactive people who had grown up in the town were involved in the project.
To join them, or to submit ideas for improving road safety, email shadey@heiwi.co.nz or kelly.stratford@fndc.govt.nz. Suggestions can also be dropped off at the Youth Centre in Moerewa.
Previous public meetings have been attended by police, council staff and representatives, and locals.
