Most of us need spending money, and to get this we need a job to get paid. The problem is, it is not easy to find a job as a young person. I asked myself why that is, and the answer is we are often unskilled and there aren't many employers willing to hire young people with less experience.
So, sometimes the jobs we take are not the most exciting and don't pay huge money, but we do have skills that make us more valuable to employers - but we might not even know it. Think about what skills you have. Are you really good at a certain sport? Do you have a hobby that means you have specialised knowledge in a subject? Your own abilities and special skills can be used to gain employment in a specific line of work. For example, I know a keen fisherman who will be earning lots of money over the holidays because he will be working as a deckhand on a boat. Try and take advantage of your strengths to set you off on the right career path.
We are the digital generation who have grown up with technology all around us, so we will probably have a better understanding than those in their 50s which gives us the advantage. Over half of the top-paying jobs in New Zealand last year were IT based, and there are plenty of job opportunities for young people with tech skills. These kinds of jobs could translate into big money so why not learn more about technology because the world is only going to become more technologically advanced.
Look at what skills you have, and think about the best way you can use them to get a well-paying job over the summer. The doors you open may lead to the career path you are interested in.
