Brollies are going to be needed this weekend with the MetService predicting strong winds and rain for the region.
The MetService has issued a severe weather watch for Northland predicting rain and strong easterly winds.
MetService forecaster Mads Naeraa-Spiers said a moist east to northeast flow over the upper North Island is expected to gradually strengthen, as a large high southeast of the country slowly weakens.
This evening, a small low is expected to move southwestwards just north of Cape Reinga, bringing a period of stronger east to northeast winds to Northland.
Winds are expected to reach severe gale force in the north this evening and tonight - and possibly again later on Saturday.
Also, periods of heavy rain are likely in Northland, mainly in the Far North. This watch covers the possibility of significant heavy rain there from this evening into Sunday. People are urged to stay up to date with the latest forecasts, in case a full warning is issued.
