A police officer on a motorbike will bolster the number of police patrolling Northland's road over the Easter holiday weekend.
Police have vowed to take a tough line during the break including breath testing every driver stopped and vigourously enforcing the 4km speed tolerance.
Five people have lost their lives on the roads in Northland this year but police are hoping it will be a fatality-free Easter weekend like last year.
Road Policing Manager Inspector Murray Hodson said wet weather had thrown another factor in the mix as the roads were likely to be extra slippery following a long dry period in the region. He advised motorists to take extra care.
From 4pm today until 6am on Monday police would enforce the reduced 4km/h speed threshold.
Mr Hodson said officers would focus on the "fatal five" known to cause fatal crashes - speed, alcohol, restraints, graduated driver licence breaches, and intersection offences.
Speed camera vans will be stationed across the state highway network and police will be holding checkpoints throughout the region .
The Northland Road Safety Association will be holding a Driver Reviver Stop today on the north bound side of state highway one near Uretiti.
