Whangarei students are strutting their stuff on the catwalk to help their peers get to Vietnam.
A fashion fundraiser featuring Whangarei Girls' and Boys' High students in gowns and suits is being held this month to help Boys' High geography students pay for the overseas trip.
The March 14 event, called PreBall 2014, will include the fashion show and raffles with over $20,000 worth of prizes.
The proceeds of the show will be used to help get 20 students, from Years 10 to 13, to Vietnam and Singapore in April.
Liam Wech, 17, is a Year 13 geography student who is currently saving for the trip - which costs $4400 per person, excluding spending money.
"The goal [of the fashion show] is to raise as much money as possible, put it into a pool, and the person who did the most work gets the biggest share," he said. Liam has done most of his fundraising by working for a family member. He has travelled to Thailand and Australia.
"When we went over to Thailand we had a look at more of the tourist side of things, this time I am looking forward to looking at other things such as living conditions," he said.
Ingrid McCracken's son attends Boys' High and is going on the trip. She is one of the organisers of the fundraising event. "The idea behind this is to celebrate all the excitement and anticipation that surrounds the biggest event of the high school calendar," she said.
"We've got a whole raft of prizes, the biggest which is a $3000 custom made designer gown from Ankia van der Berg - the designer for pageant gowns for Miss New Zealand."
PreBall 2014 starts at 8pm on Friday March 14 at the Whangarei Boys' High School hall. Tickets cost $20, include supper, which has been donated by Regent New World. Tickets also include one free raffle ticket, and are available from Kensington Pharmacy.
Extra raffle tickets will be $1 each, and the raffles will be drawn on the night, with winners required to be present to claim their prize.
