Northland schools have an opportunity to win the best remake of the song I See Red in a music video challenge and host the singer Tim Finn during the annual Red Cross appeal.
The Split Enz singer will also be a judge in the schools' Music Video Challenge where students will make their own version of I See Red and put it online.
Area manager for Red Cross in Northland, Nancy Kareroa, said every school that raised at least $200 would qualify for the competition that ran until May 24.
The Red Cross annual appeal will run from May 8 to 12 and its Northland branch raises between $6000 to $10,000 each year.
Money raised will go towards different programmes the Northland Red Cross plans to run for the next financial year from June.
Ms Kareroa said a recruitment drive to boost the number of volunteers from the current 15 to about 40 was among events planned in the lead up to and during the appeal week.
The recruitment drive will run on May 2 during the civil defence forum and the Red Cross welfare truck capable of catering for 150 people during a disaster will come up from Auckland.
The truck will be stationed at the Forum North during the day and at the Kensington Stadium in the evening.
Ms Kareroa said another community programme funded from public funds was the "Hospital Trolley" where 11 volunteers dedicated two to three hours each day selling snacks and other stuff at the Whangarei Hospital.
Red Cross is also running free first aid courses for primary and early intermediate schools and a drug and alcohol harm minimisation programme for Years 11, 12 and 13 students. Those wishing to enrol or are interested in becoming volunteers can contact the Red Cross in Whangarei on 09 4383120.
