The man charged with stabbing a Kerikeri 30-year-old with a screwdriver is being held in custody until his next court appearance.
The altercation occurred outside Kerikeri's Work and Income office off Fairway Drive about 4pm last Thursday, sparking a major police operation. A large number of people in the area were interviewed, vehicles were stopped, and the Work and Income car park was searched.
The suspect, a 35-year-old man, has been charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, possession of an offensive weapon and drug offences. A 43-year-old woman has also been charged.
Senior Sergeant Peter Robinson, of Kerikeri police, said the two men knew each other, but he would not comment on the nature of their dispute. The alleged offender was being held in custody to reappear in the Kaikohe District Court on August 11.
The victim was treated at Kerikeri Medical Centre for a stab wound to his chest.
It was fortunate a sharper weapon was not used, Mr Robinson said.
