Diabetes affects the whole family because they all have to make healthy choices, says Diabetes New Zealand Northland president Denise Moore. The organisation is holding its annual Fun Run 'n' Walk tonight, as part of Diabetes Awareness Week, to improve understanding of the condition. All ages are invited to run or walk 1, 2.5, 5 or 10km.
"The focus this week is on the whole family," Ms Moore said. "You can't go it alone, you've got to have the support of family."
She said one of the myths about diabetes was that it was caused by a sugary diet, and once diagnosed, sugar was off-limits.
"There's type 1, which is when the body doesn't produce enough insulin, and type 2 which is caused by lifestyle factors like poor diet and lack of exercise."
Registration is at 5.30pm at the Marist Clubrooms, Kensington Park, for a 6pm start. Entry is $10 for adults and $5 for under-16s.
