Murder accused Mark Lundy wants the High Court to ban newspapers and television from showing pictures of him until the end of his trial next year.
Lundy, aged 42, a kitchen-sink salesman, has denied killing wife Christine and daughter Amber, 7, at their home in Palmerston North in August last year. He was committed for trial after a depositions hearing in June.
His lawyer, Mike Behrens, said yesterday that he had filed an application with the High Court at Palmerston North seeking the suppression order.
Publishing pictures could reduce Lundy's chances of a fair trial, he said.
But the chairman of the Commonwealth Press Union's press freedom committee, Herald editor-in-chief Gavin Ellis, said any such ban would set a disturbing precedent. The grounds for the application were unclear, given that images of Lundy had already appeared in the media.
