Roadworks
The State Highway 1 Nelson St off-ramp, northbound, will be closed for routine bridge maintenance from 10 pm to 5 am. If the weather gets in the way the work will be postponed to to morrow night.
Cirque du Soleil
If you still want to see the Cirque du Soleil Alegria in Quay Park, (pictured right) you'd better get a wriggle on. The circus packs up on Sunday, before setting off for Australia.
Piha plans
The Waitakere City Council plans to convert several unused roadways in Piha into parks. The roadways are on Marine Parade South, the eastern end of Piha Domain, on North Piha Rd, on Marine Parade North. Plans are available at the council office, 131 Lincoln Rd, or telephone (09) 836-8000. Public submissions may be made until March 19.
Hero events
Hero Festival: The Off-White Art Exhibition, with work by Kevin Ghua, Richard Maloy, Fran Marno and Sarah Munro, is at the George Fraser Gallery from 6 pm to 8 pm; Youth Out Loud!, Triangle Television, 11 pm, interviews and stories of gay high school students, their teachers and parents; Hallelujah Laila!, Middle Eastern drag queen Miss Laila Carey, performs at the Cabaret Club in the Civic from 9.30 pm. Entry $35.
Food hearing
The Royal Commission on Genetic Modification will hold a two-day public hearing in Room 8.2, Tribunal Division, Auckland District Court, Kingston St, from 9.30 am to 5 pm. Presenters include Safe and Greenpeace.
Woofstock
The SPCA presents Woofstock: the Ultimate Animal Party, at the Animal Village, Westney Rd, Mangere, on Sunday from 11 am. Acts include the 1932 Jazz Orchestra, Deep Obsession and Boney M. Entry is $25 or $50 for a family of four.
Beach comments
Public submissions on the futures of the Pt Chevalier Beach reserves and Meola Reef close tomorrow. Management plans for the sites are available at level 3 of the main council office in Greys Ave, and at the Central, Pt Chevalier and Grey Lynn public libraries. Submissions should be sent to Community Planning, Auckland City Council, Private Bag, Wellesley St, Auckland.

And you thought the Hero Festival was risque. In Roman times today was the festival of Lupercalia in honour of Lupercus. As well as sacrifice and virtual key party orgies, the priests of Lupercus ran about thwacking young toga-clad women with goatskin thongs to encourage fertility. Lucky they never needed council funding.
