New Zealand seamer Daryl Tuffey took five wickets as the Black Caps beat Border by 211 runs on the final day of their match in East London.
Border, who resumed today on 36 for 2, needed 424 to win but gifted three wickets to the Kiwis and went to lunch at 151 for 5.
Only Border captain Pieter Strydom showed any resistance, making 32 before becoming Tuffey's first victim after the break.
Border then quickly crumbled as Tuffey took three further wickets for just five runs, finishing the day with 5 for 69 from 21 overs.
An injury to paceman Andrew Penn, who left the field shortly before lunch after reaggravating a side strain, took some of the gloss off the Black Caps victory.
However, Tuffey - who had a patchy first test against South Africa last week - showed he could be worthy of a call-up for the second test in Port Elizabeth on Friday (NZ Time).
