The film has been beset by misfortune and disputes, such as original director Guillermo Del Toro pulling out due to differences with the Warner Bros studio. The movie set is on the farm of Russell Alexander who manages the tourist venture Hobbiton Movie Set and Farm Tours, near Matamata, Waikato, in the North Island of New Zealand. Martin Freeman is set to play Bilbo Baggins.
