Kiwi Mitch Evans has given the strongest hint yet that Auckland is set to get a round of the Formula E world championship in 2019-20.
The Panasonic Jaguar Racing driver spoke about the possibility at his team's season launch for the upcoming 2018-19 season.
The 24-year-old was confirmed alongside Nelson Piquet Jr as one of the two factory Jaguar racers as the British outfit looks to build on the improved showing his team produced last season.
But he also talked about what it would mean to compete at home in front of friends and family.
"There could be some good news coming in the next few months," Evans said.
"Hopefully a race in Auckland in my home city, in season six, that'd be amazing.
"I really hope to have a race in New Zealand sometime soon. I know people are working behind the scenes quite heavily to make that happen."
The Herald first reported moves were well underway to bring the all-electric championship to the City of Sails last year. A private group, including one of New Zealand's most renowned sports promoters, has made significant headway and there is a feeling of real optimism that the championship will stop in New Zealand next year – possibly as the championship's opening round.
A waterfront track that will have minimal impact on commuter travel has been identified and major sponsors secured with the Giltrap Group linked to the proposal.
Government support would be crucial to any bid from New Zealand but the championship, which features leading global car brands like BMW, Porsche, Audi, Nissan, Mercedes, Jaguar and Mahindra, would be an ideal way for New Zealand to push its sustainable energy capabilities.
The 2018-19 season begins in Saudi Arabia on December 15.
