There is no doubt, the new Mercedes S-Class coupe is gorgeous. However, AMG have worked their black magic on the coupe to give us the S63 AMG Coupe. As a replacement for the long lived C63 Coupe, the S63 AMG completes the performance end of the flagship S-Class range and it is a looker.
Aggressive front and rear haunches, revised AMG spoiler and quad tailpipes add menace to an otherwise clean design.
Power comes from AMG's twin-turbocharged, 5.5-litre V8 putting out 430kW and a whopping 900Nm of torque. Managing the grunt is Mercedes' seven-speed AMG Speedshift MCT automatic transmission.
The top speed may be limited to 250km/h, but the S63 AMG Coupe takes a mere 4.3 seconds to get from 0 to 100km/h, while the optional four-wheel-drive 4MATIC does it in 3.9. That 4MATIC system sends 33 per cent of the power to the front and 67 per cent to the rear. Mercedes also claim a kerb weight of 1,995kg - 40kg less than the old CL Coupe - thanks three quarters of the body being made from aluminium. Carbon Ceramic brakes are also standard.
Three driving modes are available - 'C' (Controlled Efficiency), 'S'(Sport) and 'M' (Manual). Each is tailored to suit a drivers mood. An AMG sports exhaust system is present which serves up some classic AMG thunder when in Sport and Manual modes.
We will receive more details after its official debut at the 2014 New York Auto Show.
