In response to a letter (Letters, Friday June 22) regarding seating outside the library, your writer is incorrect when he states that seats were removed because of an injury to a child and that the seats were deemed to pose a danger.
For the record, the seats outside the library were removed about two months ago as part of changes to the configuration of parking there, in response to public confusion and requests for change.
Council is unaware of, and has not been notified of, any accident involving these seats and/or any injury to a child. We would certainly want to know if anything like that had occurred but nothing has been reported to us.
Your letter writer is correct in that the types of seats that were removed from outside the library are the same as those installed in Te Manawa. However, other than an incident of inattentive driving, council is unaware of any accidents or incidents involving the seats in this location.
The placement of the seats at Te Manawa is in part to direct cars to stay on the roadway and keep them away from the central pedestrian area. The orientation of a few of the seats in Te Manawa was changed as recommended in a safety audit conducted after the completion of the project.

Nurses deserving
Over the past six years, I have spent a few pleasant hours in the company of nurses and, being little old gregarious me, I could not help talking to them, asking them about their lives and families.
I was amazed at the hours they put in, the work they had to do, and the problems of others that they listen to each and every day - never once mentioning their own troubles.
The work they do is something only a few dedicated people would take on - I wouldn't.
I have never seen a nurse without a smile - sore feet, bad backs, headaches, almost in tears - but never without a smile and a cheery word.
There are no more unselfish people in the world than nurses.
We have enough money in the kitty, shave a bit off the MPs' wages, take a bit from the other things we chuck money at, take a few bucks off our pensions, BUT give the nurses the money they deserve.
