While Kirsty Rathbone was fighting for her life and mourning the loss of her unborn baby in intensive care, her boyfriend Gary Edwards was cheating on her.
The 27-year-old mum, from Liverpool, suffered an ectopic pregnancy and had to have surgery to remove the foetus.
As she lay in the hospital bed waiting for her boyfriend to rush from work to comfort her, he was actually cheating on her.
A few weeks later, still recovering from the trauma, a phone call from Gary's mistress revealed the truth.
"I was devastated, I'd just lost my baby and my boyfriend," she told The Sun.
"My girls were heartbroken when Gary didn't come home. They'd grown so close to him and his betrayal hurt them too."
Kirsty met Gary on a dating website and they bonded over the fact that they both had daughters.
Her family loved Gary and their romance soon blossomed. A few months later, Kirsty found out she was pregnant.
"Gary was over the moon and the news made us more determined to find a home together. Finally, our perfect family would be complete."
One morning, however, Kirsty had to be rushed to A&E has she'd woken up covered in blood.
"I was terrified," she told The Sun. "And what was worse, Gary wasn't there to hold my hand.
"He popped in and out to visit, and although I wished he could have been there more, I understood he was busy with work."
Doctors told Kirsty she needed emergency surgery or her life would be at risk.
Gary promised to be right there next to her but, just before going into the surgery theatre, Kirsty still hadn't seen Gary.
"I desperately hung onto the hope that he'd arrive, but as time ticked on, I had to accept he wasn't coming."
"I was furious with him - and sick with fear. But thankfully, the surgery went well."
He made up for it by showing up a lot later with some flowers and a very vulnerable Kirsty forgave him.
A few weeks later, Gary moved into Kirsty's home and her dream life seemed to finally be about to begin.
However, only a few days later, Kirsty received a phone call that changed everything.
"A girl at the other end asked if I was Gary's girlfriend. I said yes, and she said, 'Well so am I'. I demanded she told me everything and I felt sick as Gary's double life unravelled. She told me he was even with her when I was in hospital," Kirsty recalls.
"I was stunned. As I was losing our baby - and very nearly my life - he'd been cheating.
"It was almost too much to bear, but when Gary's mistress revealed she'd been pregnant with his baby earlier in the year too, it was an especially bitter blow."
The now ex-boyfriend has since apologised and everyone has moved on with their lives.
