The Hollywood elite spend much of their lives trying to look fabulous in front of the camera, so it comes as no surprise that there are a few tips and tricks they call upon to keep themselves looking like the millions of dollars they rake in. While some, like Emma Stone, stick with simple, natural products to help maintain healthy and glowing skin, there are others - Sandra Bullock and Demi Moore in particular - whose suggestions are somewhat questionable.
Starting at the tamer end of the spectrum, Scarlett Johansson admits to using good old-fashioned apple cider vinegar to banish blemishes. "I researched natural skincare and found that apple cider vinegar is really effective. Using it as a toner can be harsh, but if you have breakouts it can be really healing," she revealed in an interview. If you're keen to try this natural alternative, put some ACV on a cotton pad and dab onto your blemishes before bed to help dry them out. You may notice a bit of flaky skin in the morning so make sure to use a nourishing moisturiser as part of your skincare regime.
The Help actress Emma Stone has got a pretty easy moisturising regime of her own, telling Style.com that she uses grapeseed oil to keep her sensitive skin plump and hydrated. "Not to brag, but I have a lot of allergies," she explained. "I'm seriously allergic to everything. So I just use natural grapeseed oil from the grocery store on my face as a moisturiser. After the shower, I pat it on, and then I'll use it throughout the day and at night. I pretty much smell like grape all the time."
Grapeseed oil is easily absorbed into the skin and is also a great alternative for people with skin sensitivity. The antioxidants contained within the oil also work to help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles as well as provide protection against free radical damage.
Can't afford to throw down wads of cash at the dentist to get your teeth looking pearly white? Why not try Catherine Zeta-Jones' trick of using strawberry pulp to minimise stains. "The juice or pulp of strawberries contains malic acid which serves as an astringent and can lighten surface stains," said the actress, who frequently rubs the sweet summer fruit across her teeth.
And as for Sienna Miller, she admits to having used ketchup to help colour correct a nasty green-tinged dye-job. Gag all you like but this is one weird trick that has some merit. If you're a blonde suffering the effects of chlorine or an at-home hair colour disaster, just coat your hair in ketchup, leave on for around 20-30 minutes before washing off. The red pigments in the tomato sauce help to counteract green tones.
And now for the not so tasty tricks. Sandra Bullock has admitted to dabbling in hemorrhoid cream as a solution for wrinkles and puffy eyes. "I didn't realise that putting haemorrhoid ointment on your face is acceptable in the beauty business," said the star. "But apparently, butt cream helps lines around the eyes!" This is one celebrity beauty trick we don't recommend you try at home. Hemorrhoid cream contains ingredients that shrink blood vessels and can help reduce swelling, tighten the skin and thus temporarily minimise the appearance of wrinkles, but using a strong cream such as this on the sensitive eye area can lead to further irritation.
Ever wondered how Demi Moore claims to have stayed so youthful? Leech therapy. "It detoxifies your blood," she explained during an appearance on Letterman in 2008. "They have a little enzyme that when they're biting down on you, gets released into your blood and generally you bleed for quite a bit. And your health is optimised. It detoxified the blood and I'm feeling detoxified right now." Talk about making your skin crawl.
And finally, a 'tip' that is definitely not something anyone should be trying at home - using a Sharpie as eyeliner. Even the culprit herself, Taylor Swift, thinks it wasn't such a bright idea.
"I don't recommend it," she told reporters, after admitting to once using the permanent marker on her eyes in an airplane bathroom.
