Police in Christchurch have charged a man and a woman with arson after a fire at Westburn School on Sunday.

The blaze, about 7.45pm, damaged the curtains and carpet of one classroom and destroyed pupils' artwork at the suburban Ilam primary school. It was started after a bottle was thrown through a window.

Detective Sergeant Dorothy McPhail, of Papanui police, said today a 21-year-old man and an 18-year-old woman had been arrested and charged with the arson.

They appeared in Christchurch District Court today.

Ms McPhail said police wanted to thank members of the public who provided information leading to the pair's arrest.
