This 1.4ha property in Rodney has a fully renovated house, a factory, a self-contained sleep-out and a resort-style pool replete with palm trees.

That's not counting the man cave with American-style booth seating and gym.

When furniture makers Chris and Clyde Terry bought number 726 State Highway 16 in Kumeu, a 17-year love affair began.

They'd stepped into a bit of a 1970s and '80s time warp but both could instantly see the potential.

The rent on the factory they had in Henderson kept going up so they decided to look for somewhere where they could have a factory on site.

Once a chicken farm, this property was perfect. "It was all pretty much farmland and paddocks," says Chris.

"We built our factory on our land, we've put in the pool, we've turned one of the sheds into the man cave and a gym and sleep-out, and renovated the whole house."

Chris was told the house was relocated about 50 years ago."But it just had great bones and character.

"The rooms were big and spacious and the cornice in the lounge was really pretty. It had a really nice feeling."

They set about opening the house up and modernising. They put in a new kitchen and opened up the space, including utilising what was once a formal dining room.

A dated sun room, was opened up double-glazed doors.

The factory, where they initially had 12 staff, has a lunch room, an office and toilet, and separate entranceway from the house.

She and Clyde built the sleep-out for their daughter – it has a bathroom, lounge and bedroom – and when she left home their son moved in.

"Because we're furniture manufacturers, for the walls we did like a brick effect out of fabric. It's the same in the gym. It's just something different, just because we can."

The chicken shed became the man cave. There have been some great parties out there, says Chris.

Because the family likes to entertain, the "gorgeous" modern kitchen has lots of bench space, two sinks and a big oven.

The pool is curved down one side where you can sit with a cocktail. "Quite often that's where you'll find me in the summer," says Chris.

The house has four bedrooms, two up and two down, and the master bedroom has a walk-in wardrobe an en suite.

There is not a thing left to do, says Chris. "Isn't that the Kiwi way? Get the house beautiful and move on."

Real estate agent Bridget Dickson, of Wallace Stratton, says the house is handy to Kumeu village and Waimauku, and has easy motorway access.

"It's just got everything. There's something for everyone and I think that's what's so different about this property."
