More than 250 children, aged three to six, pedalled, ran and slid their way to the finish line as part of the annual Te Mata Kindergarten junior triathlon yesterday.
Te Mata Kindergarten head teacher Fiona Francois says the triathlon, in its ninth year was an outstanding celebration of the Havelock North community.
"Children enjoyed getting out and having fun with their families, and being active and giving it a go."
The event, which involves a bike, run and waterside, was held at Hereworth School.
Francois said it was a "fun family day out" with face-painting, spot prizes and a raffle, a bouncy castle and digger, sausage sizzle and cake stall among other activities.
With the Tremains triathlon and Triple Peaks events it was a busy sporting weekend in Hawke's Bay, but this event encouraged children to give it a go, Francois said.
Many have watched older siblings take part in the Weet-Bix kids TRYathlon but "this is an event especially for them".
The event is an annual fundraiser for the kindergarten.
