Four days after shifting his rental car company from Corunna Bay to Severn St in Napier, company director Jonathan Jervis' brand new yard was broken into and two $10,000-plus utility vehicles stolen.
"It's a great spot, it's bigger and the lighting is good, but we're only here four days andthis happens," he said.
After having shifted about 30 vehicles from the former Corunna Bay site (where the company had been for about 10 years) last Wednesday, it all looked good until some time Saturday night.
Thieves cut through a 2.6m wire mesh fence and barbed wire to get into the yard where they took two grey-coloured Toyota Hilux 4WD utility vehicles.
"They didn't go for anything else, that's what they were after," Mr Jervis said.
He discovered the thefts when he arrived on Sunday morning.
He saw the fence cut open and realised one of the two utilities was missing.
"I thought 'oh no, have they taken the other one as well?"
After checking, he discovered they had.
"It's just so much extra grief to put up with," he said, adding that in all the years at the former site there had only been "a couple" of minor problems.
On the same night another yard nearby had been broken into and a trailer taken.
He suspected the same people were responsible and may have targeted the vehicles to use for rural poaching. "Or tending their crops."
Police want to hear from anyone who may have seen vehicles moving through the Pandora area overnight Saturday and Sunday, or who may have any information about their whereabouts.
Calls can be made to Napier Police on 831 0700 or to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
