A 15-year-old Hastings boy will be making sure he gets to know new "friends" properly in future after he was left battered and bruised, and carless, in a car-jacking incident in Hastings late last week.
The incident had its sequel in the Napier District Court on Friday after a 17-year-old and a 19-year-old from Hastings had been caught by police after crashing the stolen Subaru Legacy through a fence and into a ditch off Riverbend Road near Napier.
Senior Sergeant Mal Lochrie of Napier police said the alleged carjacking pair approached and befriended the 15-year-old in Flaxmere about 4.30 on Thursday afternoon. They got into the car and went driving, sharing a drink with him.
But out of the blue one of the pair struck the teenager in the mouth with a beer bottle. After the boy stopped car his accomplice pinned the boy's arms down and the other "laid into him."
They then threw him out of the car and took off toward Napier "driving like idiots", Mr Lochrie said.
The youth who was driving lost control on a bend in Riverbend Road and the car left the road.
The pair ran off but a police dog tracked them a short time later to a nearby property where they were hiding.
The 19-year-old has been charged with aggravated robbery, excess breath alcohol, driving while disqualified and dangerous driving.
The 17-year-old passenger has been charged with aggravated robbery.
