As cricketer Jesse Ryder fights for his life in hospital following a brutal attack in Christchurch his friends and fans are offering thoughts and prayers, as the seriousness of the attack sinks in.
The former Napier Boys High student is reportedly in a coma, according to RNZ, after he apparently suffered a fractured skull, collapsed lung and internal bleeding in a beating in Christchurch last night.
"We are all shocked by what has occurred and extremely concerned for Jesse. New Zealand Cricket's thoughts are with him and his family,'' New Zealand Cricket chief executive David White said in a statement.
White, Peter Clinton from Cricket Wellington, Heath Mills from the New Zealand Cricket Players' Association and Ryder's manager Aaron Klee are flying to Christchurch this morning.
Mr Klee wrote on Twitter ``Thanks for the calls and msgs of support for Jesse. Just heading to Chch to see him.''
