Flying bullets from a paintball gun hit cars driving between Hastings and Waipukurau on Saturday.
The paint bullets were shot causing paint to be splattered on windscreens and car doors, scaring drivers and their passengers.
Waipukurau police Constable Rob Pratt said they had received calls from two drivers who had been hit by paint bullets but thought the offender may have shot at several more cars.
He said the shooter was in a car travelling south and had shot through a window.
"The first complaint came from somewhere in Poukawa and it hit the driver's window," he said.
Although the paint does wash off, the bullets travel at such a speed that if one went through an open window it could cause the driver to lose control. Mr Pratt said a 16-year-old Hastings youth had been arrested and referred to youth aid.
Police are interested in hearing from anyone who saw the paint balls fired.
