Kids become real superheroes by donating to the Sallies

Superhero-obsessed kids were given the chance to become the real thing as they collected cans for the Wattie's Cans for Good.

Children at Happy Days Child Care Centre in Tamatea dressed up as superheroes on August 2 and brought in a can to donate to the drive.

Co-owner and manager of Happy Days Rebecca Finlayson says it was a way to combine something the kids were interested in and giving back to the community.

"They are all being good superheroes and bringing a can to help their community," Finlayson said.

"It's a current interest of the children at the moment, they are really big into their superheroes," Finlayson said.

"We are always kind of out there in the community trying to help and kind of do anything we can to try and show the kids."

She said they spent the day doing activities such as building can towers and decorating their cans.

The Wattie's Cans for Good is run by Wattie's and the Salvation Army to help restock the Salvation Army foodbank.

There are 233 schools nationwide registered to take part.

In Hawke's Bay, there are 16 schools registered to take part, including Kowhai Special School, Te Aute College and Havelock North Intermediate.
