A Havelock North delicatessen put its best plate forward for Independence Day yesterday.
Bellatino's Food Lovers Market celebrated the occasion by selling to locals foods traditionally eaten on the day such as blueberry muffins, fresh bagels with blue cheese and salmon, and southern fried chicken.
Owner Bart Narracci said most locals enjoyed the food. ``Some have even come back for more _ the southern fried chicken proved to be the most popular dish,'' he said.
``On the day we had a small-scale celebration, no fireworks or barbecues as the 4th of July is traditionally a summer holiday.''
Mr Narracci, originally from New York, said his celebration was rather small compared with back home.
``Independence Day is a good time to catch up with family ... Back home it's in summer and they often have huge barbecues on the beach. It's winter here so I won't be going out to the beach to celebrate.
``Although our celebration is rather small, it's all about bringing some American flavour to Havelock North.''
