An iconic Central Hawke's Bay homestead and surrounds has received an Historic Places Category 1 registration for its "special and outstanding heritage".
The new registration status for Oruawharo Homestead, garden, stables and coach house followed a review by the New Zealand Historic Places Trust Board.
The trust's heritage adviser, Natasha Naus, said the 1879 homestead had regained its status as a showpiece of Hawke's Bay heritage thanks to the care and attention given it by owners Peter and Dianne Harris since purchasing the property in 2000.
As well as being a private residence, it was available to the public as a wedding and function venue. Ms Naus said the property was a fine example of a rural Victorian homestead built from native timbers and today was much as it was when first built.
"Oruawharo is an important part of the wider story regarding the European farming enterprises of the colonial elite that settled New Zealand," she said.
