Saturday's fizzer at McLean Park was the second disappointment in two days for young Hurricanes fans.
Frimley School pupils and staff were left "brassed off" a day earlier when the yellow-and black Super Rugby franchise failed to turn up to a promotional event at Frimley Park.
The Hastings school's 520 young rugby fans were told about the event at assembly on Friday.
The event at the park was scheduled to feature Hurricanes players, the Captain Hurricane mascot and a barbecue from 4 to 6pm.
School principal Malcolm Dixon said he felt let down as many pupils and parents had turned up, particularly at a time when the franchise was attempting to build support in the region.
"The kids identify with the Hurricanes, it's their local Super 15 team," he said.
Mr Dixon was told a communication breakdown was to blame for the school not being told the event was cancelled.
He spoke yesterday to the Wellington Rugby Football Union and received an apology.
"They said they'd try and make it right and send one of the more high-profile players this way in the near future."
In earlier reports, a Hurricanes' spokesman said someone had forgotten to tell the school the event had been cancelled.
The team had taken part in 12 hours of promotional work on Friday but had not been able to fit in the school event.
