The Eggner Trio - three brothers from Austria, Georg, Florian and Christoph - together with Berlin Philharmonic principal violist Amihai Grosz, are touring New Zealand this month as part of the Kaleidoscope Series for Chamber Music New Zealand, with a concert in the Century Theatre, Napier at 8pm this Saturday.
The programme of fresh and romantic piano trios and quartets - Mozart's Piano Quartet No 1 in G minor K478, Piano Trio in D Op 70 No 1, The Ghost by Beethoven, New Zealand composer Anthony Ritchie's Oppositions For Piano Quartet and Piano Quartet in E flat Op 47 by Schumann - will make for a special music experience.
Fondly remembered from previous visits, the Eggners are based in Vienna but have always had a connection to this part of the world.
In 2003 they won the Melbourne International Chamber Music Competition, launching their international career, and the last time they were in New Zealand they gave a concert as a fundraiser toward Christchurch earthquake relief. Now on their fourth visit to this country, they have their name firmly established as one of the most "exhilarating ensembles of the day".
They come here fresh from triumphant performances in Europe which included concerts in the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam and the Wigmore Hall in London.
